Kiểu khóm (raft style)

Là một thân cây đổ ngã xuống và từ đó mọc lên nhiều cây con. Kiểu này nhìn rất sinh động.

Kiểu rừng (Forest Style)

Nhiều cây cùng loại hoặc khác loại đều được, nhưng ở Việt Nam thường chỉ chơi cùng 1 loại (kiêng “lộn giống”) mọc chung với nhau trong một chậu tạo thành hình ảnh một cánh rừng. Bonsai quốc tế cũng ít thấy (nhưng vẫn có) kiểu rừng đa chủng loại, lý do là vì nhiều chủng loại thì chế độ chăm sóc, phân bón, tưới tắm rất khó chứ không phải họ kiêng.

Kiểu bonsai 2 thân (Twin Trunk Style)

Cây có 2 thân mọc chung từ 1 gốc. Khi tạo kiểu này cần chú ý làm sao 2 vòm lá phải tách biệt nhau, không che sáng của nhau thì mới đẹp. Nhiều người bảo làm cây 2 thân khó hơn cây 1 thân nhưng mình thấy cũng vậy, vẫn áp dụng đúng các quy tắc: cành không che sáng nhau, không đối xứng.. là được.

Kiểu cây bám đá (Root over Rock Style)

Ở Việt Nam rất thịnh loại này. Những cây bám đá thường có giá trị cao hơn do người ta cho rằng như thế mới thể hiện độ khó của việc làm cây. Tuy nhiên về mặt mỹ thuật chưa chắc những cây bám đá đã hơn cây trồng trong đất. Thông thường người ta dùng các cây họ ficus (sanh, si, đa..) có bộ rễ khỏe để làm cây kiểu này.
Có thể bạn sẽ quan tâm tới: một cách ký đá thả nước cho sanh hoặc kinh nghiệm nuôi rễ dài để ký đá.

Kiểu văn nhân (Literati Style)

Là những cây gầy guộc mảnh mai nhưng già nua, là cây mà giới văn nhân nho sĩ ưa thích. Thông thường cây chỉ có vài cành ở trên cao và có cành buông. Chậu phải hẹp và hơi cao mới phù hợp với dáng thanh mảnh của cây.

Kiểu gỗ lũa

Là những cây bị lột một phần lớn vỏ, chỉ còn lại một đường đi từ gốc lên các cành. Phần gỗ bị lột vỏ sẽ đục đẽo sao cho thật tự nhiên rồi bôi thuốc lime-sulphur lên để chống nấm mốc. Cành bị lột vỏ gọi là Jin, thân bị lột vỏ gọi là Shari. Đây là kiểu phổ biến trong phong cách chơi cây hiện đại, bởi những cây có lũa mới được coi là đã từng trải gió sương dập vùi. Những loại cây gỗ cứng như thông, tùng, tùng la hán.. đều có thể làm theo phong cách này.

Kiểu liễu rủ (Weeping Branch Style)

Kiểu này mọi cành lá đều xuôi hết xuống đất như cành liễu. Kiểu này cũng giống như dáng gió lùa, tức là cây nào chẳng có giải pháp tạo hình nào khả dĩ thì ta làm “rủ”. Tuy vậy cây vốn phát triển hướng thiên nên kiểu này chăm sóc rất khó, trừ cây liễu thật. Kiểu này nhìn hơi buồn nên ít người chơi, chỉ là vạn bất đắc dĩ mới dùng tới.

Kiểu rễ chân nơm (Exposed Root Style)

Kiểu này toàn bộ bộ rễ nhô cao khỏi mặt đất, trong tự nhiên thường gặp ở vùng đầm ngập mặn hoặc ở vùng nước xói mạnh làm rễ trồi lên và cứng lại thành thân cây. Hiện nay kiểu này không còn phổ biến bởi bị cho là thiếu tính nghệ thuật.

Kiểu cây 3 thân

Gồm 3 thân lớn mọc chung 1 gốc. Cách phân tàn của kiểu này cũng giống như cây 1 thân thôi, chỉ cần chú ý sao cho cành không che sáng lẫn nhau, không đối xứng, không đè lên nhau, khoảng cách các cành hợp lý.. là được.

Kiểu thân xoắn (The Twisted Style)

Kiểu này thân xoắn vặn như lò xo, trong tự nhiên chúng ta có thể gặp ở nơi có gió xoáy liên tục quanh năm như vùng trũng của một quả đồi. Kiểu này ít gặp ở Việt Nam, để tạo dáng được một cây xoắn vặn như vậy chỉ có cách dùng một vài chủng loại “tự xoắn” như cây Hoàng Đàn (Juniperus Communis) chẳng hạn.

Cũng có người quấn dây thép quanh thân cây từ nhỏ và để luôn dây trong thân, khi cây lớn mạch nhựa sẽ dần dần chuyển đổi tạo thành thân xoắn vặn. Nhược điểm của cách này là không phải giống loài xoắn vặn tự nhiên nên sau này sẽ phải làm tương tự với chi cành (rất vất vả) hoặc làm tàn lá che kín phần cành.

Kiểu bộng thân (Split Trunk Style)

Thân cây mục rỗng ở giữa do côn trùng, sét.. minh chứng cho sức sống mãnh liệt của cây trong điều kiện khó khăn. Một quy định cho kiểu này là bộng phải ở giữa cây (dù không phải chính giữa), bởi vì nếu thân chỉ còn lại 1 bên nhìn rất yếu đuối.
Kiểu này có thể áp dụng với những loài cây gỗ cứng (tùng, thông, bách v.v.) và là một ý tưởng cho những cây có gốc quá bé.
(Cho mình đùa tí với cái hình ko liên quan tới bonsai dưới đây, nghiêm túc mãi chán lắm rồi! )

Tiểu cảnh-non bộ (Landscape Style)

Tiểu cảnh: là tác phẩm mô phỏng một cảnh quan thiên nhiên nào đó nhưng không phải là một quả núi (chân núi, bờ ao, con kênh xanh xanh..)
