Nhiều người đặt câu hỏi làm sao để cây đẹp khi nhìn ở mọi góc độ, nhưng lời khuyên của các nghệ nhân luôn là: “đẹp một mặt còn muốn điên đầu nữa là đẹp nhiều mặt”. Ví dụ cây Pemphis 4 mặt của ông Budi cũng là một trường hợp đặc biệt nhưng cá nhân mình thấy có phần hơi gượng ép.

Những tiêu chuẩn cây phôi nên có khi nhìn từ phía chính diện

Phần gốc rễ

Gốc nở đều, có cạnh khến thì càng tốt. Rễ có kích thước tương ứng với cây, nên bẹt xuống đất, rễ lớn không đâm thẳng mặt người xem, các rễ không đan cài vào nhau. Đối với các cây thông tùng thì trong các cuộc thi luôn được miễn chấm phần rễ.

Phần thân

Khúc uốn đầu tiên không nên lồi về phía người xem bởi sẽ gây cảm giác tức mắt. Cũng không nên chọn thân cong đều như chữ C, thân zíc zắc nhìn không tự nhiên và thân thẳng tuột đều đặn như cái ống nước.
(Đối với thân chữ C, ta có thể khắc phục bằng cách xoay cây đi 15o-20o xem có bớt đều đặn không)

Phần cành

Bất kể cây bay đổ lắc lượn gì thì tàn cũng nên xòe tròn theo mọi hướng. Điều đó chứng tỏ cây đã phát triển ổn định. * Cành không đối xứng với nhau qua thân như xương cá. Xưa các cụ có câu “Vô nữ bất thành mai, vô thập bất thành tùng” nhưng bây giờ bỏ rồi! 2 cành tùng mà đối xứng qua cây (tạo thành hình chữ thập) là bị chê liền.
* Cành không mọc từ chỗ lõm của cây.

Rồi, vậy bây giờ bạn hãy xoay cây vòng vòng 360o xem góc mặt nào thích hợp nhất. Mặt B có 1 rễ lớn đâm thẳng chính diện và đè lên trên một rễ nhỏ. Ngoài ra có một cành cụt chỗ co đầu tiên cần phải cắt lại và sẽ để lại sẹo khá lớn.
Giải pháp là ta chọn mặt B. Rễ lớn đâm mặt tiền sẽ cắt bỏ, cắt lại cành chỗ co đầu tiên cho sát vào thân. Mai chiếu thủy liền sẹo nhanh nên sẽ không ảnh hưởng tới thẩm mỹ sau này.

Cây 2. Mặt A có đoạn lượn đầu tiên lồi về phía người xem, không đẹp. Bộ rễ thì không tự nhiên như mặt B. Bù lại có mấy cục u đẹp.
Mặt B đế đẹp, đoạn lượn đầu tiên thuận mắt (cong ra đằng sau). Cành 1 thì hơi lồi về phía người xem, không đẹp. Có một sẹo khá lớn.
Giải pháp là ta chọn mặt B nhưng xoay cây chừng 20o cho cành 1 nhìn ko quá chướng mắt mà vẫn lộ được nét đẹp của đoạn cong đầu tiên của thân. Cái sẹo lớn thì không đáng ngại bởi mai chiếu thủy liền sẹo rất tốt.

Cây 3 Mặt A chỉ có ưu điểm hơn mặt B là bộ rễ nhìn đẹp hơn chút xíu.
Mặt B Có đường cong cả 2 thân đều thuận, thân cao lại có cạnh khến đẹp. Thân nhỏ lùi về phía sau rất hợp lý bởi sẽ tạo chiều sâu cho tác phẩm (phần nào nhỏ hơn thì ở xa, nhìn sẽ thuận mắt.)
Giải pháp là ta sẽ chọn mặt B, cắt lại rễ ngắn hơn để sau này bộ rễ xòe đều (những đường cắt màu đỏ) và làm thành một cây 2 thân.
